- The building is a full block long from north to south, and blocks Quincy Street between State and Dearborn. The rest of the Federal Center is across Dearborn to the west.
- Named after Everett McKinley Dirksen, U.S. Senator from Illinois from 1951 to 1969. One of the country's most famous senators, he served as Minority Leader for many years and one of the Senate office buildings in Washington is named after him.
- Built 11 years before Kluczynski Federal Building, the next office building in the Federal Center.
